In view of the almost universal use of additives
in gear oils there arises the possibility that
separation of some of the ingredients may take place
during storage. With this in mind , Federal
Method 3455, is intended to determine the storage
stability of Universal Gear Lubricants in particular,
but may also be used to evaluate other gear
oils. The method consists of placing 100 ml of the
compounded oil in a centrifuge tube and storing
in a dark room for 30 days. The tube is then
centrifuged for 5 minutes and examined for a deposit.
Suppliers will seldom
distribute gear oils which will show settling in storage, but
if the oil is suspect separation may be due to.
